How we built BPP University a modern, branded VLE on Totara, joined up with 7 systems, so students can buy a course and start learning straight away.

Having outgrown their existing learning platform, BPP came to us for a sophisticated, feature-rich platform with more functionality around learning groups.

Maximising learner engagement
Working closely with BPP’s designers, we built a VLE around their Achievement Ladder concept, so students can see and access their learning journey clearly.
At a glance, students see recently completed courses and activities, upcoming deadlines and coursework submissions, plus announcements, news and messages from tutors, all in an intuitive, modern, BPP-branded interface.

APIs for better integration
Students get everything they need every time they log in to The Hub.
A bespoke plugin pulls courses into the VLE from Totara. Some courses also come through from BPP’s existing Moodle platform, so course directors can move their content across to Totara gradually.
News and announcements come from the Admin, or CMS, part of the app, where tutors log in.

Auto enrolment on courses
Buy a course on the website, start learning straight away.
We made sure the website, VLE and Totara work together. When a student buys a course, they’re automatically set up as a Totara user and can access their course immediately.
Most of BPP’s competitors still use lengthy, paper-based applications that take up staff time. This digital process is quicker for students and more efficient for BPP.

Key featureSingle sign-on
BPP uses our single sign-on, so students and admins log in to one application and are automatically logged in to the others connected to the same central security system.
It’s secure, and far more convenient for users.

Integration with mobile apps
BPP already had mobile apps that work as companions to the main VLE. We didn’t build the apps, but we connected Totara to them and worked with BPP’s app developer to make sure content came through correctly.
Students can reach their course content wherever they are, whenever suits them.
